Course Description:
This seminar course introduces students to the role of the gut microbiome in digestion, metabolism, and immune regulation, with emphasis on its influence in both infectious and non-infectious diseases. The course also examines current challenges in precision gut microbiome engineering and surveys emerging tools and approaches in the field. Students will engage with each topic through assigned primary research articles and participate in a variety of learning activities, including reading assignments, pop quizzes, class discussions, and class presentations.

Prerequisite: BIOL 20300 Molecular Biology and Genetics
Course Description:
BIOL 37103 is a 3-credit elective course that introduces core concepts of the gut microbiome, including its influence on the immune system and its role in health and disease. The course also provides an overview of bioinformatics approaches used in microbiome research. Through lectures and hands-on bioinformatics training, students will develop a foundational understanding of human gut microbiomics. Student learning will be assessed through written examinations, including two midterms and a final.
