The Mandal Lab
Advancing Gut Microbiome Science for Healthier Futures

Our long-term goal is to advance gut microbiome science to improve human health. We aim to define how gut microbiome-host interactions shape immune and metabolic pathways in health and disease, with the potential to translate these insights into precision gut microbiome engineering to address major health challenges.

Our lab studies how gut microbial communities influence host immunity, metabolism, and disease susceptibility. We integrate culturomics, genomics, metabolomics, immunology, and experimental animal models to uncover fundamental principles governing microbiome-host interactions. Our research spans infectious and immune-mediated diseases, with an emphasis on microbe-microbe and microbe-host signaling, bacteriophage-driven microbiome dynamics, and translational strategies to precisely engineer the gut microbiome for therapeutic benefit.
